Our Origins

Northstar Investment Management was founded in 2003 by Douglas LaBar. Douglas has been a financial advisor in Marquette, Michigan since 1983. He started Northstar because he believed he could better serve his clients through an independent broker-dealer with no proprietary products or investment banking conflicts of interest.

Northstar is 100% independent and affiliated with Commonwealth Financial Network®, who we believe is the premier broker-dealer in the industry.

What We Offer

We manage a variety of account types as independent financial advisers for people and families, entrepreneurs and their businesses, and institutions. We analyze clients' goals and personal balance sheets to tailor an investment strategy suited to each individual.

Common account types include 401-k Rollovers, 403-b Rollovers, Traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, SIMPLE IRAs, SEP plans, inherited accounts, trusts, and others.

Expenses associated with investing drag on your returns over time. Our competitive cost structure coupled with our management style can help maximize your performance.

Investing Philosophy

We believe the popularity of passive index investing has created an unprecedented opportunity for selecting individual stocks as part of a well-diversified portfolio. Our fundamentals-based due diligence focuses on finding high-quality investments trading at attractive valuations. We prefer to think in terms of years and decades rather than weeks and months.
